INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAINTING WITH ACRYLIC LACQUERS AND UNIVERSAL BASES

Black Gold paints are automotive type paints and should be mixed with acrylic lacquer thinner. If not used properly med. temp acrylic lacquer will melt styrene plastic and ruin your model. These paints should be sprayed at 25 to 35 pounds of pressure.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THINNING UNIVERAL BASES

All House of Kolor Universal Bases (Bases, Neons, Designer Pearls, Solids, Etc.) are sold in unthinned form. The user must thin according to directions on each bottle with medium temperature acrylic lacquer thinner suitable for temperature, humidity conditions in their own workshops. Most of the time medium temperature acrylic lacquer thinner will work great. Most modelers can achieve excellent results if a few basic instructions are followed. Spray light to medium wet, even coats, and allow 15-20 minutes flash time between coats.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAINTING

Apply a good automotive sandable lacquer primer. You can use a spray can or mix your own and spray through your airbrush. The primer is a protective coating for the plastics as well as a undercoat for the lacquer paint. If you spray lacquer too heavy, it will melt its way down to the plastic. It will also take a long time to dry out before you can spray again. After the primer is dry, lightly wet sand to remove imperfections. Make sure not to sand through to bare plastic. If you do, recoat with primer again. When you are satisfied with the primer coat, select a base coat. The base coat should be wet sanded with the Black Gold Professional Polishing Kit to remove all imperfections. Remember that Kandy colors will show any dust, lint, etc. in the base coat. You can spray clear on the base if this the color you want or add Kandy color on top of the base. With Kandy coats, build up color until you achieved the shade you desire. The more coats you apply the darker the color will get. If you get dust, lint, etc. on the surface when you are spraying color coats, stop spraying wait until paint is dry (about 20 minutes) then lightly wet sand the spot with extra fine grit micro-mesh cloths. Be very careful not to end up with a light spot. After the color coat is achieved, Black Gold recommends top coating with a good UV stabilized clear such as C0101 Clear. This will protect the paint from sun and fluorescent light and provide a surface to polish the paint without causing light spots in Kandy or Pearl paint jobs. Never wet sand or polish directly on Kandy or Pearl Paint for final finish without clear top coating.

Black Gold and Slixx Decals now stocks over 60 translucent Kandy’s, Pearls, Neon’s, Black Pearls, Designer Pearls, Solid Bases, Primers and Clear. You can also order from us a House of Kolor paint chip book #CC100 so you will know exactly what color you can expect to get. The Designer Pearl’s Universal base must be applied over white base to match color card then clear applied or top coated with Kandy’s for special effects. The Neon’s Universal base must be applied over a white base to match color card the clear applied. They can also be mixed with pearls or flakes for startling effects. All fluorescent paint is reactive to ultraviolet radiation and will fade with exposure to sunlight. Neon’s must be coated with a UV stabilized clear to retard fading.

KAMELEON KOLORS

Thin Paint according to directions with acrylic lacquer medium temperature thinner. Use over BC2501 Black Universal Base. Apply medium wet coats 75% pattern overlap. In most case 2 coats are enough for the paints effect. No direct sanding of Kameleons is allowed with out recoating. Scratches on pearl are permanent. Then clear coat with lacquer clear #C0101 then polish with polishing kit.

MARBLIZER PAINTS

Do not thin, material is ready to spray. Use over black or black pearl base then wait 30 minutes before applying marblizer. Allow marblizer 1 minute after application before applying saran wrap, freezer wrap, bubble pack, sponge, tin foil, etc.. You only have minutes to lay saran wrap and remove it to achieve the marble look. One coat only is needed. Wipe saran wrap with hand to achieve marble look. Let marblizer dry 15 minutes then spray Kandy lacquers on for color. Marblizer must be lacquer clear coated.

DRY PEARL POWDERS AND FLAKES

All dry pearls are lead-free automotive grade pearls. Add to any of the Kandy’s or Clears for special effects. Pearls and flakes are small and pass through the nozzle of an airbrush. They work equally well in water, enamel, acrylic-based systems. Pearls and flakes will not hide the base color beneath it. It will produce different effects when sprayed over different color bases. These can be used in base coat, color coat, or clear top coat or all 3 for special effects. Over a dark base they exhibit intense pearlescent color matching their reflection color (see House of Kolor color card). Only small amounts are needed to make pearl paint. Paint Tip: We recommend spraying a sample to see how much pearl you have mixed and to see the color you are getting, before painting your model. Use flakes and pearls in the first coat of clear followed by 2 or 3 coats of clear only.

SELF ETCHING PRIMER

This primer is ready to use. No thinning is required. Stir thoroughly so mixture is uniform. Do not use over enamel. This primer is recommended under all painting systems. Enamels, lacquer, or urethane paints. Spray thin coats. When solid hiding is established the proper amount of primer has been applied. Allow 10 minutes flash time between coats. Primer dries to touch in 15 minutes. Allow 2 hours dry time at room temperature before topcoating or sanding. Sanding is not necessary if recoated within 36 hours. This primer should not be applied to surfaces below 65°F. Clean airbrush and equipment with lacquer thinner. This primer acts as a barrier for lacquers so you won’t have ghosting problems.
